Whenever possible, begin your preparations at least four to six weeks before your planned moving day. There is a lot to do and that day arrives quickly! The first step is deciding what to move and what not to move. Then you should schedule a visit from Ayer Moving & Storage. One of our relocation specialists will come to your home to complete a room-by-room inventory in order to complete a true estimate. Ayer Moving & Storage has a 20,000 sq. ft. heated storage warehouse for just this purpose! We’ll move your belongings to our warehouse where they will be safe and secure. When you are ready to move, we will load the truck and complete your move to your new home, whether it is local, in a neighboring state, or across the country!

It is very important for our relocation specialist to visit your home to get a better idea of what the job entails. He/she will complete a room-by-room inventory and ask you lots of questions. Only then can you be sure you are getting a complete and true estimate.

At Ayer Moving & Storage, the more we know, the better able we are to give you a true estimate. We’ll ask you a lot of questions about what you are planning to take with you – the pictures on the walls, the piano, the drapes, or tools in the workshop. All this helps us to determine the weight of your shipment, how many movers will be needed, and the size of the truck! If you add items to what you originally told us, it will affect the cost of your move.
If you want us to pack your belongings for you – or some of them, like fragile items or special items, such as computers – the cost of the move will be different than if you choose to pack everything yourself.

Ask for Trade Secrets from the Professional Packers at Ayer Moving & Storage. It will give you guidance for packing on your own and things you’ll want to consider before you make a decision.

We’ll be happy to work with you whatever you decide. Just be sure to let us know far enough in advance of your moving day so we can get all the packing done properly. Your relocation specialist will give you a revised estimate to include the packing services and materials.

The law forbids movers to carry flammables. Don’t pack paints, turpentine, pressurized cans, corrosive items like bleach, or any flammable liquid. Properly dispose of or give away anything that could cause a fire or damage your belongings en route to your new home.

YES! There are special guidelines for safe transport of computers and other electronic equipment. See Trade Secrets from the Professional Packers at Ayer Moving & Storage.

Moving can be stressful for your belongings, too! You should purchase cartons and packing materials specifically manufactured to withstand the rigors of moving. We’ll help you choose the sizes and kinds you’ll need. These cartons are designed for packing household goods and our packing materials include unprinted newsprint, bubble wrap, tape, and specialty labels.

The movers start their day at 8:00 am at Ayer Moving & Storage where they pick up their instructions for your move and the truck needed. They may also have a brief meeting with the Operations Manager to be briefed on any special circumstances they need to be aware of. Then they drive to your location. Figure on 30 minutes at Ayer Moving & Storage and add in the length of time it takes to get to your home.

At Ayer Moving & Storage, we want to make this important day as stress-free as possible. You should make sure that everything is packed in advance of the arrival of the movers. The van operator is your Moving Day Manager. He will speak to you to give you an idea of how the loading will be done. Be sure to let him know what boxes or items are NOT to be loaded (or you can label these boxes or items with a DO NOT LOAD sticker). Be available to answer any questions the Manager may have. Conduct a last-minute walk-through to be sure everything is loaded that should be. Make certain windows are closed, closets are empty, lights are out, and doors are locked.

Then say your good-byes and breathe a sigh of relief – you are on your way to your new home!

Be available to check off items on the inventory sheet as they are removed from the van. It would be helpful to be available to tell the movers where each item is to go. (Make it easier on yourself by marking all boxes with the name of the room where they will “live.” Tape a sign to each room door so the movers can match the marked box to its correct room – BEDROOM 1 or DEN or KITCHEN or LIVING ROOM.)

International Moves must be paid in full before they can be shipped. Interstate Moves must be paid at time of delivery prior to unloading. Intrastate Moves (local moves not leaving Massachusetts) must be paid at time of delivery. If your move requires multiple days, the payment must be made prior to unloading at your new home.
