Moving Tip Monday: Buy All the Essentials

Moving Tip Monday: Buy All the Essentials Before you even think about packing, go out and purchase quality boxes, plenty of packing tape, labels and markers.  This way, you won’t have to make multiple trips to the store.  It’s also a good idea to buy a few extra markers and extra rolls of tape as some could get misplaced or lost in the shuffle of packing.

Moving Tip Monday: Schedule Pick Ups from Charities

Moving Tip Monday: Schedule Pick Ups from Charities
A few weeks prior to your move, contact local charities to schedule pick ups of large items and places you can donate other items you may be getting rid of.

Many charities will pick up furniture, electronics and even metals.  If you have smaller items, like clothing, tools, decor, or kitchen tools, look for thrift stores and donations bins you can drop these items off too.  When you make a donation, be sure to document what you donate and get a receipt if you can.  Many donations can be used for a tax deduction.

Moving Tip Monday: Create a Box of Bathroom Supplies

Moving Tip Monday: Create a Box of Bathroom Supplies
Pack a box of bathroom supplies you may use the day of the move to clean your former home and your new home.  You’ll likely need it when you’re moving, so put a box of handsoap, papertowels and TP aside to put in the bathroom in your new home!

This box will then be one of the last boxes packed and the first to be unpacked in your new home.

Moving Tip Monday: Service Your Car

Before moving, you should consider getting your car serviced and tuned up one week prior to the date of your move.  Even if you’re moving a shorter distance, your car will likely be driven quite a bit and may be loaded up.  Plus after your move to your new location, you’ll likely have a lot errands to run to change your address, stock your cabinets and purchase other supplies.  In addition, it may take some time for you to find a new mechanic so it’s one less thing to worry about once you move.

Get a tune up, oil change, top off all fluids and make sure your tires are full and in good condition.  There is nothing worse than packing up your car and breaking down on the way to a new home.

Moving Tip Monday

Start planning your move (if possible) 2 months ahead of time! By getting a head start you can begin planning for every detail and prioritize what needs to get done.  Pick your date of the move, start recruiting friends and family to help with packing and identify a moving company.

Then you can begin packing things that aren’t used frequently, like items in your attic, basement or garage.  Start sorting out your belongings and use this time as an opportunity to de-clutter your home.  Moving is a process and can be very time consuming.  By starting early it make the task less of a burden.

Packing your clothes like a pro

Moving is often ranked as one of the most stressful life experiences, but it doesn’t have to be! Watch this video for helpful tips on how to pack your clothing before your next move.

Before you start packing your clothing, it’s a good idea to go through your closets and dressers to find clothes that you haven’t worn in a year. You can donate your old clothes to charities and those in need. Get new cardboard boxes so that you don’t risk staining your clothes with used ones, and group your hanging items together with twist ties and standard garbage bags. Inexpensive clothing items like t-shirts can be put in a bag and transported easily on moving day.
